Each
comparator performs a specific task when its compare register matches the count value.
The period comparator causes the PWM output pin to be set and the free-running
counter to be reset when the period-latch value matches the counter value. The width
comparator causes the PWM output pin to be reset when the width-latch value matches
the counter value. With a suitable low-pass filter, the PWM module can be used as a
digital-to-analog converter.
